Project: London Bridge Station Redevelopment
Contract Value: £1bn
The Judges say... "Arguably Europe’s most multifaceted infrastructure development, London Bridge Station was delivered in a way that sets a blueprint for the delivery of major complex projects and creates legacy for the capital and surrounding areas."
Built in 1836 with little investment since the 1970s, the key aim was to untangle the bottlenecks and approaches to London Bridge Station to accommodate more trains and more passengers. Around 140,000 people currently use the station each day and it was important to remain operational while extensive works were carried out. Applying a holistic approach to all aspects of the project, Network Rail, Costain and the Costain supply chain have worked collaboratively with relationship and interface management critical to success. The culmination of six years of major redevelopment, London Bridge Station is now a world-class transport interchange with a grand new street level concourse that represents a dynamic piece of twenty-first century architecture that delivers significant benefits to its local area and commuters.
“In this category, we look for outstanding projects that demonstrate the highest levels of technical achievement, innovation and application of best practice.” explains Kevin Payne, Residential Projects Director, Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield; head judge and sponsor of the Project of the Year Awards. “Arguably Europe’s most multi-faceted infrastructure development, London Bridge Station was delivered in a way that sets a blueprint for the delivery of major complex projects and creates legacy for the capital and surrounding areas.”
