Old Oak Common Depot - submitted by Turner & Townsend

The Old Oak Common Depot project is the procurement of new rolling stock, construction of a sustainable, carbon friendly site depot and stabling for the new fleet, together with associated maintenance and support services to enable delivery. It is the largest railway depot construction in the UK, and the project includes sidings for 33 trains and 30 year maintenance of rolling stock.

The project was completed on time and to budget through notable best practice, commercial and programme management and a collaborative team approach. The project was kept on track in an operational environment and with nil RIDDOR occurrences, nil Lost Time Incidents and only one incident requiring first aid with nil near misses.

Team work has been the cornerstone of this project’s success. The extended team established a new project mindset which was focused on collaboration and a de-badged way of working. A harmonious working methodology and clear project/contractual administration expectations were set through all aspects of the wider project team which enabled the team to collectively reset expectations, share best practice and adopt more agile working behaviours. The working methodology focused on integration with stakeholders/shareholders, designers, contractors, sub-contractors and specialist equipment suppliers in addition to secondary stakeholders such as Network Rail, TfL, RfL, MTR, Crossrail, OPDC, and HS2. Together they identified key threats to the programme and lead delivery through risk-based decision making.

This turnkey suite of services facilitated by the project team enabled delivery of the depot in readiness for the November 2018 commissioning date.
