Wokingham Borough Council have been keen to push the boundaries and industry norms to maintain and support the education, leisure and public health aspirations. As a Local Authority, they aim to prioritise the interests of their communities and residents. Through collaborative efforts, they involve the end-users throughout the phases of construction.

All schemes undergo an extensive consultation with the planning authority, residents, students, and parents – the needs of every type of user are considered from the beginning. They consult their end-users at the beginning and end of the project, and facilitate open conversations with their communities for the duration of their construction projects. They host ‘meet the designers’ day, where they run design workshops in which they proactively ask the end-users to speak up. They encourage questions about design, any small or large concerns or questions and ask them to input on how they would like the spaces to look and function.

All construction contracts require contractors to participate in and support the Council’s ‘Employment and Skills Plan’. This plan aims to infuse regeneration and economic growth of local trades, businesses and skill-sets. As part of this, the council ensure that all local projects employ trainees and apprentices. Schemes are built with dual use so that facilities and spaces are best utilised and reach their maximum potential across the community. New schools are built with playing pitches and sports halls which are used by the community.

Wokingham Borough Council already work extremely hard to share best practice through the appropriate forums. Furthermore, the council is the lead provider of many shared services across Berkshire, including Operational Property, Legal Services and Building Control.
